District Geocaching 2011
The brand new District Geocaching competition was attended by
five teams from 5th Wigan, 1st Ashton, 3rd Hindley and 16th
Wigan.
Geocaching is an event were using a GPS, map and a set of clues
you must find hidden caches. The caches are each worth different
numbers of points and there will be 5 hours to find as many as
possible. The event will be held between the pike and castle area
of Rivington.
The competition consisited of 30 specially laid caches
throughout Rivington starting from the top barn upto the pigeon
tower. The caches ranged in size from a 35mm film case through to a
shoebox sized plastic box. The caches didnt always exist, some were
'virtual' meaning the cache was hidden in signs and information
around a co-ordinate.
The results were as follows :
1st Ashton A
1st Ashton B
5th Wigan
16th Wigan
3rd Hindley (Explorers)
We are thinking of leaving the caches out so other Scout groups
can spend time looking for the caches. If this is the case the info
will be posted here.
Many thanks to Mike from 1st Standish for organising the event.
It took Mike a good couple of weekends to get the caches placed,
stock them with sweets, come up with the clues and sort out the
paperwork.
Heres to next year!
