St Georges Day Parade 2011
St George's Day Parade was held on Sunday 17th April, a week
earlier than usual, (due to Easter Sunday being on April 24th.)
It was a glorious day, and the Scout section was well
represented having 14 out of the 17 groups from Wigan attending.
There was also a good representation from the Guide Section, who
join in our Parade each year. Although numbers seemed down from
last year, this was probably due to the fact that it was held
during the school holiday period, and we were told that quite a
number of the young people were away.
Following the District flags, the District Commissioner, Allan
Foster accompanied by the Mayor of Wigan, Councillor Michael
Winstanley and Mayoress, Councillor Judith Atherton, headed up the
Parade. Councillor Jean Peet also attended. We are extremely
grateful to these people for taking the time to join us on this
special occasion and to show an interest in both the Scout and
Guide movement in our town. I am sure that everyone was pleased to
see The Mayor taking the salute at the base outside of Wilkinson's
store.
The leading group this year were 16th Wigan, and they set the
standard with their extremely smart appearance.
After a short walk around the town centre the Parade returned to
the Parish Church for a thoroughly entertaining Service conducted
by the Rector, the Reverend Ray Hutchinson. Although it seemed that
numbers were down, the Church was absolutely packed with members
from both the Scout and Guide Movements.
What a spectacle when the Flag Procession paraded down the
centre aisle when leaving the Church after the Service.Grateful
thanks must go to our invited guests, the Rector, clergy and
organist from the Parish Church, the Police Officers, all the Band
members who played so well, and to everyone who helped organise or
play a part on the day.
Just a reminder that the St George's Day Parade in 2012 will be
on Sunday April 22nd.
